Our orthopedic veterinary specialty team includes four board certified veterinary surgeons with over 50 years of combined experience, seven certified veterinary technicians as well as a dedicated, pet loving staff. Michael Bauer, DVM

Diplomate, American College of Veterinary Surgeons


Dr. Michael Bauer is a native Kentuckian but has called Colorado home for the past 25 years. He received his Veterinary degree from Auburn University in 1982 and completed a surgical residency program at the University of Tennessee in 1986. He taught veterinary surgery for 10 years at the University of Saskatchewan, Purdue University and Colorado State University.

In 1996 Dr. Bauer moved to Colorado Springs and started a small animal surgical practice that gradually evolved into Colorado Canine Orthopedics and Rehab. Dr. Bauer is passionate about helping animals and helping people that love their animals the way he loves his. He takes prides in treating people the way he would like to be treated if his pets were in need.

His family includes his wonderful wife Kimberly, and his other four legged family members: Sweat Pea, Noodle, Daisy and Piggy. Aside from spending time with his family, Dr. Bauer enjoys cycling, skiing, yoga, fly-fishing and playing guitar.

Todd Riecks, DVM

Diplomate, American College of Veterinary Surgeons


Dr. Riecks who was born and raised in Ohio, received his DVM from The Ohio State University. He went on to complete his internship and residency at Med Vet Associates, Ltd. in Columbus, Ohio, a nationally recognized advanced muti-specialty, emergency, and cancer center.

His passion for canine orthopedic and neurosurgery allows him the privilege to " for and interact with so many wonderful pets and their people.  It is awesome to witness surgical success and see these dogs and cats return to their fun, active CO lifestyles!  Positive owner accounts and compliments continue to humble my practice."  He’s thrilled to be living in Colorful Colorado where he enjoys snowboarding, Alpine Touring, camping, backpacking, and photography.  Todd is a registered yoga teacher and enjoys a committed daily yoga practice of his own.  He is a dedicated participant in the Tiny House Movement and strives for a minimal earth impact.

He is delighted with his daughters, Jesse and Jaime.  He shares his tiny space with his partner Heather and a Border Terrier, 'Manitou.'


Todd Riecks, DVM, Orthopedic Veterinary Surgeon - Colorado Canine Orthopedics

Scot Swainson, DVM

Diplomate, American College of Veterinary Surgeons


Dr. Swainson was born and raised in Cheyenne, Wyoming and completed pre-veterinary studies at the Univeristy of Wyoming. After receiving his DVM degree from Colorado State University in 1994, Dr. Swainson completed a one-year general internship in Los Angeles, California followed by a one-year surgical internship in Winter Park, Florida. Dr. Swainson then completed a 3-year residency in small animal surgery at Iowa State University. Following his residency Dr. Swainson was a clinical instructor at the University of Wisconsin.

Dr. Swainson became board certified as a Diplomate of the American College of Veterinary Surgeons in 2000.

Dr. Swainson then entered private practice and has worked in Boston, MA, Loveland CO, and Albuquerque, NM. He joined Colorado Canine Orthopedics in the summer of 2008 and has settled himself and family here in Colorado Springs, CO. 

Nate Miller, DVM

Diplomate, American College of Veterinary Surgeons

Dr. Miller grew up in Evergreen, Colorado. He received his undergraduate degree from Harvard University and returned to Colorado, graduating from Colorado State University Veterinary School. He was intern of the year at North Carolina State University and completed his surgical residency at the University of Georgia in 2002. He became board certified by the American College of Veterinary Surgeons in 2004.

Dr. Miller has practiced in Denver, CO and Santa Cruz, CA. He returned to Colorado in 2012 and joined the team at Colorado Canine Orthopedics and couldn’t be happier.

Dr. Miller has extensive experience in arthroscopy and has been an instructor in courses nationally. Other professional interests include joint replacement and correction of limb deformities

Dr. Miller’s family consists of his wife Christine,  his two daughters Jessie and Charlotte, and Fred the corgi.  He enjoys cycling, fishing, and spending time with his family.
