Medial patella luxation (MPL) is a common disorder where the dog's knee cap slips out of position. MPL mainly affects toy breed dogs and most will experience lameness of varying degrees usually before their first birthday.
The diagnosis can be made on physical examination but arthroscopy is also useful to evaluate the extent of the problem. Most cases require surgery for definitive treatment and the prognosis is excellent.
